The government of Bangladesh plans to import 400,000 tons of wheat and 200,000 tons of rice in the next 15 days.

Rice Imports by Bangladesh

The Advisor Council Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Finance Adviser of the interim government Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, gave the approval in principle.

Suppliers are typically given 42 days to supply products under the public procurement law (PPA) 2006 and public procurement rules (PPR) 2008.

However, following ACEA approval, the supply period has been reduced to 15 days in order to facilitate prompt importation and avoid food shortages.    

Regarding the proposed import, the Finance Advisor told reporters that the government initiated the move to import rice and wheat in order to avoid a food supply shortage.

“These are not immediately required, but the government wants to keep our inventory ready for supply,” he explained.    

According to the proposal by the Ministry of Food, the government is to import 200,000 tons of rice in the current fiscal year 2024-25 and 400,000 tons of wheat through the G2G system.

In fiscal year 2024-25, the government set a target of 350,000 tons of rice from international sources and 1.923 million tons from domestic sources.

It also set a goal of procuring 700,000 tons of wheat from the international market and 10,000 million metric tons from the domestic market for fiscal years 2024–25.
