The trilateral highway connecting India, Myanmar, and Thailand was one of the projects that the external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, discussed with his counterpart from Myanmar, Than Swe. Additionally, they stressed how important it is to keep the border regions peaceful and stable. Before traveling to Myanmar, Jaishankar visited Indonesia on business. He also had a meeting with Don Pramudwinai, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Thailand.
Discussions held with Myanmar
Initiatives for connectivity with regional implications were the main topic of conversation. Regarding the meeting, Jaishankar tweeted that it was critical to move forward with projects that had encountered difficulties, particularly the trilateral highway between India, Myanmar, and Thailand.
Jaishankar stressed the need for peace and stability during the discussions and expressed concern about recent unrest in the border regions. He pleaded with all parties to hold off on taking any action that might make things worse. He also called for stronger collaboration between relevant parties to facilitate the speedy return of trafficked victims while highlighting issues with human and drug trafficking.
The Trilateral Highway
The goal of this 1,400-kilometer highway project is to strengthen ties in trade, business, health, education, and tourism between India, Thailand, and Myanmar.
Although roughly 70% of the construction work has been finished, the project has been delayed because of difficulties in Myanmar. The Indian Government is putting more effort into figuring out how to get the highway project moving again.
Other Discussions
Given that Myanmar is India's immediate neighbor, Jaishankar expressed India's concern about the humanitarian situation there and suggested people-centered initiatives to deal with the pressing issues. In addition to stressing the value of peace and stability, he reiterated India's support for Myanmar's democratic transition process. In this regard, India seeks to closely coordinate its policy with ASEAN.
Jaishankar then met with Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai to continue the conversations they had in Jakarta. He expressed how pleased he was to have met Pramudwinai and how much he was looking forward to the Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) meeting that was going to take place later that day.
Jaishankar's itinerary in Bangkok included attending the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers' Retreat and the 12th Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Mekong Ganga Cooperation Mechanism.
