Due to the adverse weather in India, Dubai's Al Khaleej Sugar plans to boost output at its cane sugar mill this year, as reported by the company's managing director on Tuesday. During the yearly Dubai sugar conference, Jamal Al Ghurair stated that the refinery located in Jebel Ali, Dubai, produced approximately 600,000 metric tons last year at 40% of its capacity. This year, he hopes to generate up to 1.5 million tons. The refinery is capable of producing higher-quality sugar if demand is high, although its usual output is 1.5 million tons. It produced 1.87 million tons, a record, in 2017.

Al Ghurair claimed that due to the adverse weather, India had ceased exporting, which had, at least momentarily, increased demand. The production of sugar in India was predicted by the International Sugar Organization to drop to 31.7 million tons in 2023–2024 from 32.8 million tons in the previous season and 35.6 million tons in 2021/22. This prediction was made last month. According to Al Ghurair, the company currently imports all of its unprocessed sugar from Brazil, with the Far East, the Middle East, and East Africa being its key markets for refined sugar. 85 percent of the company's output is exported. According to him, tighter market conditions were necessary for the refinery to run at maximum efficiency.
