According to an official declaration, the central government has approved the export of 30,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Tanzania in addition to 30,000 tonnes of broken rice being shipped to Djibouti and 50,000 tonnes to Guinea-Bissau. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade stated in its notification that National Cooperative Exports Limited is authorised to export these items to these nations. Notably, in July 2023, shipping of non-Basmati white rice was outlawed in order to monitor domestic prices and guarantee food security in the country.

Such a variety of rice was previously permitted to be exported by India, but in different amounts, to Nepal, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, the Republic of Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, Seychelles, UAE, Singapore, Comoros, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, and Kenya. Even though the rice exporting policy was first amended, DGFT insisted that exports would only be permitted if other nations requested it and received authorization from the government to meet their demands for food security.

India Tightens Rice Exports

One of the main consumers of non-basmati rice from India is the West African nation of Benin. UAE, Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Cote D'Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Vietnam, Djibouti, Madagascar, Cameroon, Somalia, Malaysia, and Liberia are more countries of destination. India implemented extra security measures in late August by setting a minimum threshold price for exports of basmati rice. This was done to stop non-basmati white rice from being exported, which had been banned since July. The 20% export tariff on parboiled rice was recently extended by the national government until March 31, 2024. Parboiled rice is rice that has been partially boiled with husk.

The charge was first imposed on August 25, 2023, and it was scheduled to go into effect on October 16, 2023. Its initial goals were to ensure sufficient domestic availability and monitor its pricing. India, fearing poor output from a decline in the area under paddy cultivation, outlawed the export of broken rice in September 2022 and levied a 20 per cent levy on exports of all non-Basmati rice, excluding parboiled rice. Later, in November, the prohibition was lifted.
