According to a newspaper, Vietnam is the world's third largest rice exporter, trailing only India and Thailand.
As per local media, which cited the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on 5th of July, Vietnam exported 4.2 million metric tons of (MMT) rice for 2.3 billion US dollars in the first half of the current year.
Vietnamese Rice Exports
At present, the Philippines and China are among Vietnam’s top rice importers, according to the ministry. More rice would be exported by Vietnam to the Philippines due to the impacts of the El Ninõ weather
phenomenon on the Philippines domestic food production in the second half of the current year, as per the local Vietnam newspaper on the 5th.
According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam's exports of rice increased 22.2% in volume and 34.7% in value, year-on-year, during the six-month period.
Vietnamese Government’s Targets
According to the newspaper, the Vietnamese government recently approved a rice export plan that aims to cut annual shipments from 7.1 million tons last year to 4 million tons by 2030.
The nation intends to diversify its export markets, focusing in particular on those where there is a high demand for high-quality grains and those with which it has free trade agreements. Vietnam plans to diversify its rice export markets in order to reduce its reliance on any single country.
The move is intended to “increase high-quality rice exports, ensure domestic food security, protect the environment, and adapt to climate change,” according to a government document reviewed on May 26.
