Located in Asia, India is an agricultural powerhouse. Over the years, it has established itself as a reliable agro-supplier and different countries around the world depend upon the Asian nation for sourcing agro-commodities for their domestic consumption needs. From rice to sugar, the Asian nation has cemented its position as a reliable supplier in the global grain market and such is its significance that any disruption in its grain supply is bound to raise prices and difficulties for vulnerable countries around the world.
Recently, there has been speculations that India might curb rice supply in an effort to tame food inflation and that has raised alarms for countries primarily dependent upon India for their food needs.
To put that to rest, India has come forward to calm and clarify the situation and in a statement, the Asian nation has reiterated that it remains committed to export food grains to vulnerable nations.
India’s Grain Diplomacy
Despite existing restrictions on export of wheat and broken rice, India continues to ship these commodities on Government to Government (G2G) basis. Last month itself, India approved export of broken rice to Senegal, Gambia and Indonesia after it received request from these nations for the agro-commodity.Talking of wheat, India continues to export the grain to its neighbor Afghanistan, which is going through difficult time.
Not only these, India has also shipped agro-commodities to a number of countries including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Israel, Indonesia and Malaysia, in times of need.
The Government of India (GOI) believes this is going to be crucial in positioning itself as a key player in global food security space which has been facing challenges ever since the start of Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.
Concerns of El-Nino Eased a Bit
With monsoon covering the entire part of the country, concerns of El-Nino weather pattern have eased a bit. However, the late arrival of monsoon has already fueled up food prices in the domestic markets of the country.
Rise in prices due to climatic conditions have not only been the case with India or countries in South Asia, but the world in general. Global rice prices are already at an 11-year high and GOI’s move of increased payment to farmers for new season, choked up global supplies and El Nino are likely to further raise global prices of rice.
PM Modi’s Statements
Despite the issues of reduced output and rising cost at domestic front, India has been actively exporting food grains as part of its humanitarian assistance programme. This highlights India’s commitment in this regard and last month itself, while addressing the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ summit, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shree Narendra Modi said that India will not only be the voice of the Global South but was ready to play a crucial role in maintaining global food security amid rising climate risks while taking a lead role in charting out new dynamics.
