India's Agro-Commodity Export Policy
India, which is well-known for being a significant exporter of onions, rice, and sugar, had previously placed limitations on the export of these foods. The action was done in an attempt to keep local prices stable ahead of the approaching Lok Sabha elections.
The Narendra Modi-led government approved the export of these goods for 2024-2025 through a bilateral mechanism at the Maldivian government's request, according to a statement released by the Indian High Commission in Male. The authorized amounts also represent the highest levels since the mechanism's implementation in 1981. In 2024-2025, India will provide the Maldives with one million tonnes of stone aggregates and river sand, respectively. During this time, it will supply 109,162 tonnes of wheat, 64,494 tonnes of sugar, 124,218 tonnes of rice, and 35,749 tonnes of onions, according to the statement.
The notification said that there would be no current or upcoming export limitations or prohibitions on shipments of these goods to the Maldives during the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which started on April 1. The quotas for eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat flour, and dal (pulses) have increased by 5%, according to the statement.
India imposed export prohibitions on onions in December 2022, non-basmati rice in July 2023, and wheat in May 2022. Despite this, India prioritized domestic needs and only occasionally supplied these commodities to important allies like the UAE and Indonesia as well as neighboring Bangladesh. In spite of a ban on exporting these goods, the statement mentioned that India kept providing rice, sugar, and onions to the Maldives last year. As part of its “Neighbourhood First” policy, “India remains strongly committed to supporting human-centric development in the Maldives,” the statement read.
