In an official announcement, Egypt decided to continue its ban on the export of sugar for three more months. Earlier in June, Egypt continued the March’s sugar restriction on the export of sugar for three months to meet the domestic needs of the nation.

During the March ban, the Egyptian Minister of Supply and Internal Trade said the supply of sugar exported was stopped, noticing the reserves and growing demand for sugar in the local market.

Egypt is among the important sugar exporters in Africa. In 2022, Egypt exported sugar and sugar confectionery worth $348.95 million. The major importers of Egyptian sugar and sugar confectionery are South Korea, Uganda and Italy.

Sugar producers within Egypt have assured the public that they will work diligently to meet the increased demand in the domestic market. However, there is still uncertainty about the government's stance on sugar exports after the three-month ban expires.

Egypt’s Onion Export Restrictions

After the sugar export ban for three months, the Egyptian government also restricted the export of onion for the next three months, effective from October 1st. Earlier the onion export restriction was effective from September 20th but the Egyptian government postponed its onion export ban to October 1st. The main reason behind this three-month restriction is to stabilise the domestic onion prices.

There is a sudden increase in the prices of onion. Onion prices have surged to EGP 35 per kilogram in many local markets. Last year, these prices were EGP 12 and the previous month's rate was EGP 27. According to the reports, Egypt harvested around three million tonnes of onion each year. Out of which a substantial portion is exported.

The Bottom Line

To sum it up, the Egyptian government has decided to continue its sugar export ban for the next three months. This sugar export restriction was started in March for three months, and after that Egyptian government restricted the sugar exports again in the month of June. Sugar is not alone, the Egyptian government also restricted the exports of onion for the upcoming three months, this ban is effective from October 1st.
