In spite of ongoing restrictions on raw wheat, India is reportedly thinking of removing its ban on the export of wheat flour, including wheat or meslin flour (atta), refined wheat flour (maida), and semolina (suji).
The move comes after a strong domestic procurement season, with 29.92 million metric tons of wheat purchased, almost meeting the 31 MMT target. Stocks have also improved significantly, reaching 36.93 MMT in June, up from 29.91 MMT the previous year.
While a full resumption of wheat exports appears unlikely in the near future, easing restrictions on flour exports could signal a gradual return to global trade, beginning with value-added products.
According to Tradologie.com, such a development shows a strategic balance between maintaining food security and cautiously re-engaging with export markets. This could be an early sign for international buyers, particularly those in wheat-dependent countries, to prepare for renewed access to Indian flour products.
