APEDA Chairman: Big Opportunities to Increase Share in Global Agriculture Trade

A government official said on Wednesday that Indian exporters have huge opportunities to increase their share of global agriculture trade from the current 2.4 percent. The global trade of agricultural commodities is about $2 trillion.

According to Abhishek Dev, chairman of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), these figures indicate "huge opportunities" to boost exports from the nation.

He stated at the Indusfood 2025 inauguration in Greater Noida that "our share is 2.4 per cent in the overall world agri trade and immense possibilities are there to increase this share," even though the country is the seventh largest agri-exporter in the world.

India is aiming to set a "new record" for its agricultural exports this year, which were valued at around $50 billion in 2023–2024, he said.

Dev went on to say that encouraging the export of value-added goods is currently the main target.

The chairman discussed India's 2.5% market share in organic product exports, saying, “But we have an ambitious target of increasing the share four-times in the next five years, and we are working on that."

There is a $147 billion global market for organic products.

The nation's exports of organic food have increased steadily over the last ten years, rising from $213 million in 2012–13 to $494.80 million in 2023–24.
