Malaysia’s Agro-Commodity Demand

He mentioned to reporters, “We need sugar, onions and basmati rice. Our domestic rice production meets about 65% of our requirement and the demand for basmati rice is rising. Around 25% of our population prefer to eat basmati rice. We believe that India can allocate some quantities of these essential commodities for Malaysia even if there is an overall ban.”

India, the world's largest exporter of rice and onions and the second largest exporter of sugar, had imposed export restrictions to keep domestic prices under control.

Earlier, speaking on the sidelines of an event hosted by the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association, Ghani stated, If India opens up, it will benefit Malaysia. Due to export restrictions on food items, Malaysia, the second-largest palm oil exporter to India, finds itself in a difficult situation.

Malaysia is one of the largest exporters of palm oil to India, and the minister stated that there will be no replacement for palm oil in the future. Ghani stated that they do not anticipate a decline in palm oil exports to India due to population growth.
