Are you looking to Onions importers? Since the restriction on outward exports was removed early this month, India has shipped more than 45,000 tonnes of onions, the country's highest official said on Wednesday. Farmers were relieved by these exports after restrictions were put in place to maintain stable domestic supply before the general elections. The largest vegetable exporter in the world banned the bulb's exports in December of last year and then renewed it in March in response to a spike in prices brought on by slow production.
"More than 45,000 tonnes of onions have been exported abroad since the ban was lifted, mostly to Bangladesh and the Middle East," Consumer Affairs Ministry Secretary Nidhi Khare told PTI. On May 4, the government relaxed the ban on onions but enforced a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne in order to maintain prices reasonable throughout the election season. According to Khare, the prediction of a strong monsoon this year would guarantee improved onion seeding starting in June for the kharif (summer) harvests.
She said that state-owned organisations have begun to acquire onions from the most recent rabi (winter) crop in order to create a 5,00,000-ton buffer inventory for the current year. According to initial projections from the Agriculture Ministry, the nation's onion production in the 2023–24 crop year is predicted to decrease by 16 per cent from the previous year to 25.47 million tonnes as a result of reduced output in important growing regions including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
Amidst a backdrop of fluctuating onion prices and concerns over domestic supply, India recently lifted its ban on onion exports, resulting in a surge of over 45,000 tonnes shipped abroad. This move, initiated early this month, comes as a relief to farmers who faced restrictions aimed at stabilising prices ahead of general elections. Following the ban lift, Consumer Affairs Ministry Secretary Nidhi Khare revealed that shipments primarily targeted markets in Bangladesh and the Middle East. However, challenges loom as key onion-producing states report lower yields, hinting at a potential decline in overall production for the upcoming crop year.
