The Center implemented plans to substantially boost wheat procurement from non-traditional states, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar, amid the intense heat of the currently underway Lok Sabha electioneering. The goal is to achieve a substantially jump in purchasing to 50 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year of 2024–25. Furthermore, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra told reporters on Thursday that "it will be a dream for us to export now" despite the ongoing embargo on wheat shipments abroad.

Despite the fact that the combined contribution of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar to the central pool during the 2023–24 marketing year (April–March) was only 6.7 lakh tonnes, the Union Food Ministry has chosen to acquire 16 per cent of the 310 lakh tonnes of wheat that are targeted for procurement in 2024–25. Food Corporation of India (FCI), the Center's nodal agency, and state agencies typically handle the acquisition of wheat at the minimum support price (MSP). Nonetheless, cooperatives Nafed and NCCF have also been included, each with a 5 lakh procurement goal for this year.

Ensuring Smooth Wheat Procurement: Initiatives by the Government

According to him, the authorities have also chosen to use Farmer Producer Organizations, Panchayats, and Self Help Groups in addition to opening more procurement centres that are aimed at production hotspots and mobile procurement centres. Aside from that, he continued, the government has made sure that agencies have working money to guarantee that farmers receive their MSP payments within 48 hours. The secretary went on to say that real-time procurement monitoring and agency coordination are now possible thanks to the establishment of a central control centre at the FCI headquarters in Delhi.

According to the food ministry, six lakh tonnes of wheat have already been procured so far this year from six states -- Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar. The procurement from traditional states of Punjab and Haryana will begin soon. The government has banned wheat exports since May 2022 to boost domestic availability and check prices. The wheat production is estimated to be a record 112 million tonnes during 2023-24, compared to last year's 110 million tonnes as per the agriculture ministry.
