Kabuli Chana Prices

The weather over the next few weeks will determine the crop size even though the acreages have increased. Additionally, according to trade sources, exports have been strong ahead of Ramadan next month. “This year, Kabuli chana cultivation increased significantly in all of the country's major growing areas. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh have seen an increase in area”.

Farmers have increased sowing for this year's crop in response to record-high prices of around ₹150 per kg. Furthermore, demand for Kabuli chickpeas increased significantly both domestically and internationally last year, contributing to price increases, according to Harsha Rai, Vice-president, Sales at Mayur Global Corporation, an international agro commodities brokerage house.

Impact of Monsoon

The crop size will depend on the weather over the next few weeks, even though the crop area and condition looked good. “Central India with its large-scale cultivation of chickpeas has felt the monsoon rain deficit. December was warmer than usual, but January brought colder temperatures.  Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see what yields the Central India crop will produce, as the IMD predicts a hotter February for the region.” Rai stated.

Kabuli Chana Production

The India Pulses and Grains Association's chairman, Bimal Kothari, predicted that this year's crop of Kabuli chana will be larger due to an increase in acreage. Although the nation's production of Kabuli chana is not officially recorded, trade sources approximate its amount at approximately 3.5 lakh tonnes.

The government combines the numbers for Kabuli chickpea production with crop projections for chana. India is a buyer and seller of Kabuli chana.

According to DGCIS data, India exported 68,654 tonnes of Kabuli chana worth ₹816.72 crore between April and November. Exports totaled 1.21 lakh tonnes in 2022–2023 and were worth ₹1,200 crore. India sells kabuli chana to a number of nations, including Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.

In the current fiscal year, imports of Kabuli chickpea totaled 72,060 tonnes, valued at ₹518.72 crore, between April and October.

Opportunity for old stocks

This year's early start to Ramadan is keeping prices stable. Since the new crop harvest starts in mid-February, kabuli chana prices typically experience a decline during the months of December, January, and February. Compared to the prior year, there is more stock liquidity during this time. This year, however, was an exception to the norm, with prices rising during these months against forecast. The market for old crop stocks has been significantly impacted by this year's early start of Ramadan, which started on March 10. This has given old crop stocks a special chance to satisfy consumer demand.
