According to the September report of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Philippines will overtake China as the world’s top rice importer despite the global rice price surge.

According to Meristem, a Nigerian advisory firm alerts Nigeria for the expected surge in the prices of rice, edible oil, and other imported commodities in the upcoming months as recently India put restrictions on the export of rice to fulfill the needs of the domestic market.

The Agriculture Ministry of Russia stated that the export duty on wheat by Russia would be increased by 12.1% to 4,493.7 rubles per tonne on September 13 - 19, 2023 from the previous week’s 4007.6 rubles per tonne, reported by Interfax, a Russian news agency. This export duty increased by 7.5% in a week previously.

Datuk Seri Johari Ghani, a member of parliament for Titiwangsa, has urged the government to make efforts to lessen Malaysia's reliance on rice imports required to meet domestic demand for the grain.
