India exported 22.3 million metric tonnes (MMT) of rice worth more than $11.1 billion in 2022–2023. In many ways, India's role in the world's rice trade is comparable to that of Indonesia and Malaysia in the palm oil trade.

To combat rising food grain prices, the Union government has banned the export of white rice (other than basmati) with immediate effect. Even though exporters are concerned about the ban, observers believe that Andhra Pradesh farmers will not be significantly impacted by the Centre's decision.
