With sugar production expected to be 9% lower than the previous year, sweetener prices have already begun to rise, rising by Rs1.25/kg in the last month on the retail market.
Sugar Pricing
Sugar prices are rising, according to sources, due to a drop in estimated output. Sugar retail prices increased from Rs 41.05/kg on the 2nd of April to Rs 42.30/kg on the 2nd of May. Similarly, wholesale prices have increased by Rs124/quintal in the last month. Sugar wholesale prices have risen from Rs3,805/quintal on the 2nd of April to Rs3,929/quintal on the 2nd of May.
Sugar Output
According to sources, sugar production was 357 lakh tonnes in the previous year, where the government exported 10 million tonnes. This year, too, production was expected to be high; however, production estimates suddenly fell, and it is now expected that the current year's output would be around 9% lower than last year, at around 32.7 million tonnes. In order to provide relief to consumers, the Food and consumer affairs department is expected to release an additional sugar quota in the coming days.
