The Prime Minister’s Address

Speaking at the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE), which is being held in India for the first time in 65 years.

Modi recalled that during the previous International Conference of Agricultural Economists, India was still a newly independent country and that the nation's agriculture and food security were facing challenges.

"Now, India is a food surplus country," he said, noting that it is the world's largest producer of milk, pulses, and spices.

In addition, the country is now the second-largest producer of foodgrains, fruits, vegetables, cotton, sugar, and tea.

He also stated at theconference being attended by around 1,000 delegates from over 70 countries, “There was a time when India's food security was a concern for the world. Now, India is working to provide solutions for global food security and global nutritional security.”

As a result, Modi stated that India's experience is valuable in discussions about food system transformation and will benefit the global south.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed India's commitment to global welfare as a "Vishwa Bandhu." He emphasized several mantras proposed by India on various fora, including 'One Earth, One Family, and One Future', 'Mission LiFE', and 'One Earth, One Health'.

Modi emphasized the importance of the agriculture sector in the Indian economy and highlighted the work done by his government in the last 10 years for the growth of the farm sector in a sustainable manner.

"Agriculture is at the center of India's economic policies," he said.

According to Modi, 90% of Indian farmers own very little land, and these small farmers are the most important source of food security in the country.

He pointed out that a similar situation exists in several developing Asian countries, making India's model applicable.

The Prime Minister also stated that India has introduced 1,900 new climate-resilient crop varieties in the last decade.

He said that India is encouraging natural farming without the use of chemicals.

Additionally, he stated that the nation is working toward meeting the 20% ethanol blend target in petrol.

Importance of the Conference

The conference will showcase India's innovations in agricultural research and policy as well as the country's proactive response to global agricultural challenges.

The Prime Minister also recognized the gravity of the issues surrounding water scarcity, climate change, and nutrition. He offered the superfood millet, or Shri Anna, as a remedy because of its high yield and low water requirements. Modi stated that India is ready to share its millet basket with the rest of the world.

He also discussed in his speech how India is using digital technology in the agriculture industry.

The objective is to enhance collaborations between research institutes and universities, impact policy decisions at the national and international levels, and exhibit India's agricultural achievements, encompassing innovations in digital agriculture and sustainable agri-food systems.

"Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems" was the conference's theme this year.
