The Indian government increased the monthly sugar quota from 23.5 lt for March and 22 lt released for February to 25 lakh tonnes (lt) for April in order to fulfil the increased demand during the election campaign and ahead of the summer season. Every month, the government sets an allowance for each mill based on the amount of sugar that must be sold on the domestic market.

In accordance with the announcement from the Food Ministry, 198 mills in Maharashtra would receive a quota of 9.37 lt of sugar for April, 119 mills in Uttar Pradesh will receive a quota of 7.28 lt, and 71 mills in Karnataka will receive a quota of 4.10 lt. Mills have been given 168.5 lt of sugar in total for domestic sales from October 2023 to April 2024. Furthermore, some mills are reportedly selling more in December and January than they were allowed to.

Government Asks Sugar Mills to Verify Stocks and Submit Online Forms

The government, according to an official of a prominent sugar company in Uttar Pradesh, whose allocation has been reduced by 25%, is not raising the quota for the company despite the request because the mill's revenue was negatively impacted by increased output compared to a year ago and by rival mills breaking the quota regulations. The official said, "At the end of the day, both shake hands and both know each other's compulsion, so it's a friendly match between the government and sugar mills.

The government has instructed all sugar mills to complete the P-ll form electronically on the National Single Window System (NSWS) portal by April 10 and obtain verification of their actual stock as of March 31 from the Authorised Officer of the appropriate State Cane Commissioner. No quota will be issued to any sugar mill for the month of May if the mill does not submit the PII form by April 15 for the month of March. Additionally, the ministry requested that sugar mills and distilleries publish data on the production of ethanol from B-heavy, sugar syrup, and juice from sugarcane on the NSWS portal.
