The government will take steps to achieve atmanirbharatha (self-sufficiency) in edible oils and pulses, according to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who announced the establishment of a National Mission for edible oil seed.
The Finance Minister presented the Union Budget for 2025 in Parliament.
She added that the government is launching a nationwide edible oil seed initiative, highlighting the "ability of Indian farmers to grow enough for our needs and more."
She stated that "ten years ago we achieved near self-sufficiency in pulses," and that farmers had responded to the need by expanding the area under pulse cultivation by 50%. The government also made arrangements for procurement and fair prices.
Our consumption of pulses has significantly increased, she said. Tur, urad, and masoor will receive particular focus during the six-year pulse mission.
According to her, the government will purchase the same from farmers who have registered with the designated agencies over four years.
